Beyond Expectations e-Brochure
Produced by Avanti in partnership with Bavaria Tourism, this detailed and curated e-Brochure covers a wide selection of superb travel options that you can expect from beautiful Bavaria.
Munich
At the base of the German Alps sits Munich, Bavaria's affluent capital that boasts centuries-old structures, a well-established brewing tradition, strong artistic sensibility, stunning architecture, and the world-famous Oktoberfest — a destination where tradition and modernity exist harmoniously. With nicknames such as 'the largest village in the world' or 'the city of art and beer', it's relatively easy to imagine a city that promises to deliver travel experiences fit for everyone.
Regensburg
Nestled along the banks of the storied Danube River lies Regensburg, Bavaria's first capital that dates back to Roman times. Deemed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is one of Germany's top cultural attractions and is a treasure trove of medieval landmarks like the 12th-century Stone Bridge and the 13th-century Regensburg Cathedral — a church renowned for its Gothic architecture and striking twin-spires.
Franconia Region
This enchanting region is characterized by its exceptional wines, beer, historic cities, large natural parks, lovely towns, and distinct local dialect colloquially referred to as 'Franconian'. Not only is Franconia a must-visit destination for history buffs, it's also fantastic for foodie travelers who are keen on sampling the area's diverse culinary gems.
Bayreuth
Bayreuth blossomed in 1735 after the marriage of Margrave Friedrich and Wilhelmine — the sophisticated sister of Prussia's King Frederick the Great. Wilhelmine's legendary patronage for culture and the arts served as a beacon that attracted artists, composers, poets, and architects from across the continent, which in turn birthed a significant majority of the town's attractions like the ornate Margravial Opera House and the annual Wagner Festival.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
This well-preserved medieval gem is one of the most notable stops in southern Germany's famous 'Romantic Road' — a scenic route that winds through medieval sites and lovely Bavarian towns characterized by half-timbered houses and cobblestone lanes. Visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber and traversing its historic streets definitely feels like stepping back in time.
Nuremberg
Packed with history and culture, Nuremberg was once the undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire and the favored home of many German kings. Today, the second largest city in Bavaria is one of the region's biggest draws — a magnetic beacon for visitors looking to admire Nuremberg's many architectural wonders while enjoying the city's excellent bratwurst and red beer.
German Alpine Road
Spanning around 280 miles from Lindau to Berchtesgaden National Park, this legendary road trip is Germany's oldest tourist route and is properly filled to the brim with gorgeous panoramic scenery, quaint villages, historic landmarks, fascinating cultural heritage, delectable culinary gems, and unforgettable local experiences. This route is ideal for any type of traveler regardless if they are nature lovers, history buffs, or adventure seekers.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
After merging to host the Winter Olympics in 1936, this gorgeous mountain retreat has since become Germany's finest skiing destination. Aside from powdery slopes and scenic trails, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also home to Partnach gorge and Werdenfels Museum. It's also a superb gateway to Zugspitze — the country's highest peak. This destination is ideal for the adventurous set who are keen on activities such as skiing, sledding, hiking, and paragliding.
Füssen
Oftentimes referred to as the 'Romantic Soul of Bavaria', Füssen is a stunning medieval city that should be visited in order to be fully appreciated. Although it is known for its proximity to the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle — the dream abode of King Ludwig II of Bavaria — the town itself is home to several attractions like the 9th-century St. Mang's Abbey and Hohes Schloss, which now houses a regional art museum. Füssen is also known as a great base for hiking and skiing.
Lindau
Situated on the eastern edge of Lake Constance, Lindau is an island destination that's primarily known for its picturesque Old Town characterized by well-preserved medieval and Baroque architecture. The city is home to notable events like the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and the Lindauer Marionettenoper. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of excellent activities that can be enjoyed such as boat tours, hiking, and cycling. Vistors can also check out the City Museum to learn more about the local history.
Bavarian Castles, Gardens & Lakes
Once the playground of Baroque kings and princes, gallant knights, and the elegant pageantry of the highborn, Bavaria is unsurprisingly dotted with remnants of its regal past such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace, and Herrenchiemsee Palace. Travelers should make it a point to visit and explore the numerous majestic residences, lavish gardens, and stunning lakes in order to truly appreciate the staggering beauty of Bavaria.
